Artist's Comments

this is vexorum, and he he belongs to *Konsumbrot. [link]

this is for her current contest. as you can see in the ref picture, vex doesnt have wings. cant have a wingless dragon now can we. so we were to design his wings.

now, about that funny looking design.
vex is an aquatine dragon, properly known as shurkai-alan. shurkai are magical beings, so this design is basically me mucking around with an unfamiliar magic system. since vex is a very...unique shurkai, he cant have just normal wings.

i know one of the other shurkai, kket, can shape-shift, so this is kinda like vex's shape-shifting in constant flux. what it comes down to is his wings are solid but...amorphous. they're half real (see the bones and such?) but a good portion of them is pure magic. theyre constantly changing and the two wings are asymmetrical. the edges are little flowing curls of magic and the pattern changes moment to moment. the leading edge is always black and the trailing edge is white, but other than that, it varies. this is very hard to explain. um...look! shiny magic!

now, since the wings are in fact solid (you could poke them if you wanted to), he can indeed fly. of course, his wings change shape and pattern when he moves, so flight is quite spectacular.

(the contest focuses on the wings, but come on. look at him! how could i not draw and color that! i drew him in class without the ref, so hes a bit longer than he should be. and yes, his hindquarters are higher than his shoulders. look at his face; thats so on purpose.)

Oooh~ :o Very nice. I love the whole clown-fish/butterfly approach to him. :D The anatomy is spot-on and I love how "Vex" seems to just dance across the page/computer-screen.

I really adore the design of those wings, so whirly! I mean seriously, those wings are made of win. *Grins* Oh geez, net slang! *facepalms* Nice proud pose too, but I'm curious, how did you get that texture in this? Was it the paper?

Always up for making new friends, seeing new art ;) No worries, I dont bite!

its sketchbook paper. its pretty rough, so it does interesting things with the pencils. not good if you want a smooth look, but its neat. i just put down the colors i wanted and went over all the red/orange really hard until it was mostly solid. pretty much like how i usually color, just a bit quicker i think. and yes! swirly wings!
